This island has it all

 
Sifnos

The Cycladic islands in Greece are most known for their iconic white-washed buildings stacked on a hillside that wrap around small, sparkling bays. Islands like Mykonos, Santorini and Paros are often the first to capture tourists’ hearts, however, it is well worth the effort to venture off the beaten path and visit some of the lesser known jewels of the Aegean Sea. 

In an attempt to avoid the tourist masses and discover what the Cyclades are truly about, our family began visiting the small island of Sifnos nearly 20 years ago. Sifnos, back then, and still today is known for its wild beauty, architecture, ceramics, and unique cuisine. The way individual porches and verandas open up to the streets and pathways on the island have attracted architects from all over the world to come visit. Sifnos is perhaps best known for their history of ceramics produced on the island which date back to antiquity. For centuries, the island’s towns were busy with pottery workshops and ceramics were stacked onto fishing boats and exported all over the Mediterranean. Today, the pottery is still alive and thriving, but only a few workshops continue to use the same traditional clay and glazes, such as the Lembesis family. This family includes 5 generations of potters and their studio is in a small village near the top of the island and worth visiting, but until you do be sure to check out our collection of Lembesis bowls.

We couldn't mention a Greek island without talking about food -  unlike the rest of the Cyclades, Sifnos has its very own cuisine and is home to the annual Cycladic Gastronomy Festival. From Athens, Sifnos is three hours by catamaran or five hours by ferry. For ferry schedules, check here. You an make easy connections from Sifnos to the islands of Milos and Serifos. Just in time for summer entertaining

 

Summer means relaxing outside, taking in some well-needed Vitamin D, and enjoying the company of family, friends and neighbors during impromptu porch hangs, BBQs or just dinner al fresco. When we spend the summer in Greece, we do all of the above, especially in the evenings when the heat dissipates and the Mediterranean Sea breeze starts to flow in. 

To help with the cool down, we always have some ice-cold beverages to keep us company. As much as we love a frosty beer, we use these occasions to mix it up and imbibe on simple, refreshing cocktails or, for the traditionalists, ouzo on ice. Your cocktail is typically served with a small bucket of ice so you can continue to refresh your drink as the ice melts. Of course, Greeks never have alcohol on an empty stomach. There are always some snacks to nibble on as you watch the sunset with your drink in hand. Most often, you will find plump Kalamata olives and additionally salty pieces of graviera cheese - second-favorite to feta in Greece.

Wherever we are, we like to recreate these evenings because we find them to be the idyllic way to wind-down a long day at work or a way to kick-off an outdoor gathering with friends. Our metal ice bucket with tongs and set of two mezze (Greek for small dish) boats are all you need to put this together at your home with any drink or snacks of your choice. So, in the spirit of the season, be ready with these essentials for your next entertainment and pair with any of the recipes below to make some seriously cool summer libations. 

OUZO AND COFFEE COCKTAIL via SOUVLAKI FOR THE SOUL
 
ice cubes
30 ml fennel syrup (recipe follows)
60 ml ouzo
30 ml of your favourite coffee flavoured liqueur
brewed coffee, chilled
orange slice for garnish

Fill a stemless wine glass with ice. Add the fennel syrup, ouzo and coffee flavoured liqueur and stir. Top with chilled brewed coffee and garnish with an orange slice.

For the fennel syrup: Lightly grind the fennel seeds using a mortar and pestle. Grind them just enough to release the oils. Do not turn the seeds into a fine powder. Combine lightly ground seeds, sugar, and water in a saucepan over a medium-high heat. Allow the mixture to come to a boil. Cook for 5 minutes until it slightly thickens. Remove mixture from heat, and allow it to infuse for 1 hour. Strain the syrup, and let it cool before using in a cocktail

PALOMA ROSA via QUITOKEETO

1 cup fresh grapefruit juice
1 cup tequila blanco
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
smoked salt or flaky sea salt
lots of ice cubes
1 cup club soda

Combine the grapefruit juice, tequila, lime juice, and sugar in a container. Stir, wait five minutes, and stir again. To prepare each drink, run a lime wedge along the edge of half of each glass, and dip rim in salt. Pour 1/2 cup of the grapefruit mixture into each glass filled with ice. Top off with about 1/4 cup of club soda.

The best neighborhood to stay in Athens

One of our favorite ways to spend a day in downtown Athens is to weave in and out of each little neighborhood, taking in their history, architecture, and of course, their traditional eateries and eclectic shops. We have a ritual of sorts where we start with a freddo cappucino and a fresh-made pita at a cafe just off Syntagma square.

With our caffeine and phyllo fuel, we head down to our usual Plaka shopping haunts, followed by lunch in Psiri, then a quiet stroll around Anafoitika before grabbing a cocktail at Taf in Monastiraki. At the end of a day like this we always feel pleasantly exhausted and excited about treasures we've found or new shops and tavernas we've discovered.

You can see so much by foot throughout the day. But picking one place to stay in Athens can be hard. After many days of exploring like we've had, we have determined what we think fits the bill as a great all-around place to stay in Athens. It is somewhere quiet and not too touristy, affordable, with great proximity to see everything, and has such a cute name: Koukaki.

Koukaki is a small residential area next to the Acropolis and includes two pedestrian-only streets, Drakou and Olymbou streets, making it a fantastic destination to wander on foot. These streets are lined with cafes and bars so you can enjoy people-watching while you plan your day of sightseeing. Also, be sure to check out this guide of Koukaki by blogger, "Greece Is."

There are a few hotel options in the area, but rentals with Airbnb go for as low as $35/night! In fact, this year Airbnb listed Koukaki as one of the 16 most popular neighborhoods to visit in the world where visitors are seeking a more authentic experience living like a local in their chosen destination. We would agree!

Straight from the sea

Greek cooking is simple and often relies on three things to bring out the natural flavor of fresh meats, fish and vegetables---olive oil, lemon, and salt. When we are cooking with our aunts in our village, they are always telling us to add more and more salt (and olive oil!) to the dish. All of my Greek relatives cook with sea salt and most other Greeks do too, even if they use the store-bought standard. For purists, nothing compares to sea salt hand-harvested directly from the rocks along the shore. The salt is 100% natural with no chemicals or preservatives added, leaving it rich in minerals like magnesium, zinc and iron as compared to table salt.

After our last trip to Greece we brought back sea salt from Mani, a region in the southernmost part of the country known for its rocky terrain where villages seem to hang from clifftops over the sea. Every summer when the sun is the strongest, harvesting takes place on the rocks along Mani's coastline. The salt collected has a fresh and unique flavor that brings out the best of every meal when you cook with it. To try it out for yourself, purchase our Lembesis Bowl No. 3  and select the "salt" option and we will include a bag of sea salt and a small olive wood spoon. This bowl is the perfect vessel to keep salt and other staple spices near your stovetop for easy access during cooking.

Fresh Lemon Juice Dressing

  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 2/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • finely chopped shallots and/or a spoonful of good mustard (optional)

Whisk the olive oil into the lemon juice. Add salt and pepper to taste. If using shallots, let them sit in the lemon juice for 5 minutes before whisking in the olive oil. If using mustard, whisk into the lemon juice before whisking in the olive oil.

Upcycled sails, stories that live on

In 2013, an internationally ranked competitive yachtsman from Athens, Stratis Andreadis, was teaching a sailing seminar on the island of Corfu when two of his students gave him a bag that they had made from a used sail. It was an old apprentice sailmaker’s trick to use decommissioned sailcloth to practice sewing on what was otherwise a useless material.
